While you might imagine bourbon is my go-to drink (and you would often be right), I’ve been crushing on Cosmopolitans for ages.  And I’ve been tinkering with various versions for just as long.  I’ve needed quite a bit of alcohol to deal with the political situation in Washington over the past few months, so tinkering with my latest recipe has become an obsession.  I’ve been mixing them up in Mason jars by the quart.  Sometimes I share them with friends.  Sometimes I just sip on them to steady myself after watching the evening news.

I’ve long admired a Cosmo that is bracingly cold, and I understand to achieve this you should shake your cocktail in a fancy-schmancy cocktail shaker with loads of ice for at least a full minute.  This is not especially practical for a crowd, and I always seem to be tending to crowds of thirsty friends in my corner of the world. Oh, and simplifying my life has been my theme this holiday season.  So I struck upon a genius move.

Pour the cosmo ingredients into a one quart Mason jar a few hours before you plan to serve your cocktails.   When your guests arrive (or after news of another cabinet appointment breaks), no need to mix and fuss – just pull your ice cold jar from the freezer, give it a quick shake, and pour.  Extra credit if you pop your martini glasses in the freezer for an elegant touch.  I should note this never works for me because my freezer is crammed full of ice cream and frozen fruit and empanada wrappers.  And I’m not that elegant.

We served these to nearly everyone in our party of 25 for Thanksgiving.  People gushed and asked for seconds. After dinner we pretended not to notice when the college kids mixed up another batch while doing the dishes.

In my considerable research to bring you this recipe, I have discovered that if you keep the pre-mixed jar in the freezer overnight, the Cosmos tend to freeze to nearly a solid.  But no worries – if you pop it out on the counter, or in the fridge, it will thaw and be ready to serve in no time.  In case another terrifying CNN news alert pops up on your phone.  But only if it’s nearly cocktail time, of course.  Then again, my grandfather always said: “It’s cocktail hour somewhere in the world…”

A few things I’m crushing on this week:

The 46 Most Powerful Photos of 2016.  I’ll warn you, some of these images are tough to see.  But it’s an extraordinary selection.

I’ve been thinking about where I get my news.  Our family has spent quite a bit of time discussing this fascinating chart outlining where news falls on the “truthiness scale”  this week.

But we can all agree these Triple Peppermint Brownies are simply divine.

Have a wonderful weekend all!
